Slow striped bass action - good blackfish bite! Print E-mail
Monday, 23 April 2012

This week the striper catches started off slow but as the week progressed it came to a screeching halt as the resident wintering schools continued their migration into Northern waters. What has prompted this departure is any bodies guess but it certainly was not lack of forage or water temps as both are ideal and abundant.

The Trainer clan started the week with brother's Jim and John along with Jim's son Brady scouring along the beaches in search of some striper activity. After a bit of searching around and finding readings that appeared to be a "lock and load" school of bass it was time to get the guys fishing. The first couple of casts came up empty but surely it was only a matter of time or "recipe" to get the rods bending or so I thought. As we continued to work over the area with no result it was now time to put the trolling rods into action but as we continued to throw the tackle box at them and still no response we retreated to the bay to find a modest top water action going 5 for 7 on stripers and keeping 2 at 30" before ending the day.

Next up was the Ryan Coleman party with much of the same results along the beaches - lots of bait , no bass! From there we went with plan "B" finding a very cooperative blackfish bite with fish from ranging 3-7lbs. The guys ended the day coming up empty on the top water striper action.

The week ended with the Eric neilson party staying within the confines of the bay/inlet where the guys experienced another decent blackfish bite but finding just how crafty these fish can be. For most of the day the guys continued to feed rather than catch these tricky gamesters finding out just how entertaining but maddening they can be!

And so the stage is set to welcome the next school of migrating trophy stripers as water temperatures are perfect and bait is abundant in our area and with bluefish historically [ by my own logs] available by April 23rd in Barnegat bay I am looking forward to this weeks action and adventures!

Wishing eveyone fair winds and calm seas,

Capt. Steve Purul
