Blues and Bass Still Active In Persistant North East Winds! Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 May 2013
With only one exception last week's steady North East winds didn't keep anglers from catching tons of bluefish and a few nice keeper stripers aboard the Reel Fantasea. With "Small Craft Advisory" well in place for most, if not all of the week we found ourselves keeping to the back bay. Luckily Barnegat Bay's safe confines kept us well protected and catching fish!

Thursday's open boat found regulars Jay Simmons and Karl Steffan joined by Ken Purzycki starting off the week battling moderate NE 10-15mph winds and loads of cooperative bluefish all trip long.

Next up was the Fred Gockely party to battle 20-30+mph winds and tons of bluefish. Fred got a bait passed all the voracious bluefish and scored a nice keeper striper before trips end.

Friday evening open boat had regular Jay Simmons back again to be wind tested with Bill Cohen and new comer's Steve and Ryan Gross. The trip started off slowly and didn't get much better from there as we only landed a few bluefish and one out of two keeper stripers.

Regular Joe Franke and Clan closed out the week with more fantastic bluefish action and a keeper striper in cold, cloudy, and blustery conditions. The guys endured punishing weather and were rewarded with hot action throughout the morning.

I have Thursday 6am - 11am available for private or open boat and 2 spots for this Thursday and Friday evening open boat trip 3-8pm. All bait and tackle and fish cleaning is included - $100.00pp.

Stripers, bluefish, blackfish and weakfish! Print E-mail
Monday, 29 April 2013
This week the Reel Fantasea saw more variety coming over the gunnel and the first Barnegat Bay Slam being scored 2x's in a single 4 hour trip!

Jeff Hayes and Frank Hetler teamed up earlier this week mixing it up between back bay and wreck fishing, The day started off slow for the guys in the back bay so off we went looking for some blackfish to play with it. Our first stop we had steady action on both keeper and short blackfish . At times our baits were getting bit even before the sinker reach the bottom. We managed to hit a couple more snags with the same mix of shorts and keeper before ending the day in the back bay with modest bluefish action.

Sunday evening I had a chance to scout out a few spots that had a very exciting mix of stripers, bluefish and some of the biggest weakfish that I have ever saw! Scouring 2 Barnegat Bay Slams in a 4hour trip all by myself on light tackle was a blast!

This week has a couples spots open for both Thursday 6am -12pm and Friday 6am-12pm and 3pm - 8pm. With the present back bay action in place we will at least incorporate more of this solid light tackle action unless the striper migration shows more encouraging signs in the way of bigger striped bass.

Stripers, bluefish and red drum! Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 April 2013

Barnegat Bay continues to offer light tackle action with striped bass for anglers aboard the Reel Fantasea this week. And if that weren't reason enough to wet a line anglers aboard have also scored keeper red drum and bluefish as well! Yes RED drum!

The week started with regular Kevin Rust , Wayne Hopkins and Tom Breeland out for some light tackle fun. The guys started their day picking away at stripers on the first few drifts. The next drift produced a nice red drum for Wayne, from there the guys landed 3 more reds securing a limit of red drum ranging in size from 18-21! The guys ended the day picking away at a few more bass before ending their day.

Next up was regulars Jay Simmons, Karl Steffan and Shawn Hawthorne out in cloudy, rainy, foggy and very windy conditions [30mph +] looking to capitalize on more light tackle action. The first stop of the afternoon started off slowly before Shawn came tight with a very visible top water strike even in the windy conditions. Our next location we found the bass much more cooperative and had multiple fish on almost every drift for the rest of the afternoon until the strong SSW wind started tipping the 40mph which ended our day a few minutes early.

Wayne Hopkins was back out again bringing his son Jonathan , also joining was new comer John Barret and son Patrick for a very cold start with temps in low 30's brrrr. The guys scored not only striped bass but also both youths scored our season's first couple of bluefish! The overnight cold temps seemed to temper the action a bit but the guys did manage 8 bass and 2 blues on the light tackle before ending the day.

I do have 3 spots available for April 25 and 4 spots for private charter for 26th , bigger bass are moving in and the troll bite is taking off and we will look to encounter them if the weather allows [ ocean] , if not the back bay has remained a solid light tackle option as a back up plan! I am also planning to hit a few wreck for some blackfish if conditions are favorable.

Nicer Weather Welcomes Migrating Stripers Print E-mail
Sunday, 14 April 2013
As if on cue with last weeks laughing gulls arriving so does the first signs of migrating stripers this week! With only one exception both weather and fishing continued to improve and provide more fun light tackle striped bass action this week. No doubt that more ocean migrating bass are moving into the back bay as evident with some bigger bass arriving with hitchhiking sea lice.

Sea lice are a natural ocean occurring exterior "house keeper" who basically are like little beneficial cleaning machines that keep their host clean a free of more harmful parasites. T hey also indicate newly arriving fish to our area as only ocean fish seem to wear them for a short while after entering into our back bay.

This week we will be fishing our normal 5hrs back bay trips adding not only more time but more locations to explore and intercept more arriving stripers!

Employing both artificial and natural baits we be our plan to mix it up and have fun. I have room on both Thursday and Friday for either open boat or private charters for anyone who would like to join the fun. Remember to join us on face book and "like us" and view photos.

Wishing everyone fair winds and calm seas,

Capt.. Steve Purul

Light tackle striper action puts us over 300 for March! Print E-mail
Sunday, 31 March 2013

Another great week of catch and release light tackle schoolie striper action was had by those aboard the Reel Fantasea this week! Anglers aboard continued their season rampage with sporty stripers to put our total of catch and release stripers over 300 in just the month of March!!

Again this is strictly a light tackle catch and release event as most fish are ranging from 10-24" with consistent" hot rod" bending action through out the trip! These trips lend themselves well to novice and veterans as we are catching fish within seconds of arrival. Also a great way to introduce kids to the sport as the bites are non stop keeping them engaged and entertained.

Winter flounder also continue to spice our catch and be a viable option for those who want to sample that fishery. Switching back and forth from bass to flounder is simply and easy depending on the angler's desires.

With the weather finally starting to warm and the bays water temperature "spiking" to a season high of 45 degrees the action should continue to get even better as resident fish become more active and are joined by Northerly migrating fish.

Private and Open Boat available - Bring friends and family for a private charter or meet new friends on a open boat, either way isn't time to have some fun and go fishing? Remember to join us on Face Book to view photos and hopefully "like us".
